This is a larger than life false head. These false heads were used to identify important
dignitaries, as a mark of their status and protection in their afterlife. Skillfully
carved in relief with a high degree emphasizing on naturalism. Painted with red cinnabar
which is associated with death and afterlife. Remnants of white crushed shell paste
to both eyes. Solid and intact - Near choice condition. Chancay culture, ca. 900
- 1470 AD. Central Coast Peru. Face measures 12” in height.
