Intricate Details and Artistic Narrative of these

Aymara/Spanish Colonial Artifacts

This rare collection of Aymara/Spanish Colonial silver artifacts showcases the expert craftsmanship of Andean metalworkers from the 17th to 18th century. The set includes a finely crafted ceremonial silver bowl and an assortment of intricately designed Tupus (shawl pins), each displaying distinct motifs and symbolic elements.

The ceremonial bowl measures 4.5 inches from handle to handle and features a single ox at its center, a possible representation of agricultural wealth and prosperity. Finely detailed leaf motifs surround the exterior, likely symbolizing fertility and abundance. The bowl’s handles take the form of llamas laden with goods, emphasizing their role in Andean trade and ritual practices.

Accompanying the bowl is a collection of Tupus, traditionally used to fasten garments and denote status within Andean society. Each is handcrafted in silver, with open scrollwork and engraved designs depicting harvest themes, birds, and intricate leaf patterns. The largest measures over 11 inches, while the smallest is 6.25 inches. One particularly unique Tupu stands out due to its open swirl-shaped head, featuring two rows of protruding prongs—one missing due to antiquity. This unusual form may have had symbolic significance, possibly relating to continuity, energy, or the cyclical nature of time in Andean cosmology.

This remarkable set, possibly used together in ceremonial practices, reflects the fusion of Inca traditions with early colonial influences. Its exceptional detail and historical significance make it an important and rare example of Andean ceremonial metalwork.

Condition: Fine. There is excellent patina on the surface with minimal oxidation present. Impacted dirt in crevasses.
